I find myself in possession of a small (about thumbsize), level-adjustable gas tank, and a spark igniter. Basically, I want to build something with a pint-size pyrotechnics display built in. Current ideas are A: abstract flamey thing built from whatever scraps I have around, not too interesting tbh, B: finding a suitable model of a dragon & getting mythological with it, C: a four element Zen Garden, obviously with a fire feature, or D: a box with a flaming pentacle sat atop it. Maybe a small moving Rube Goldberg steampunk model, but that implies a lot more faffing with very fiddly mechanisms, awesome as that would be.

I think the Garden is taking my preference at the moment, but I'm asking for input as I only have one set of pyro kit... so don't want to regret the deployment later when a better idea occurs. I'm very good with small workings & details, have a decent toolkit, a high-power rotary tool and loads of attachments to do all sorts with metal/wood/plastic/stone etc, and I can bodge for England. Only limitation is I'll probably only do projects that would use a yellow flame ... Bunsen is too hot for safety at these scales.

hmmmm, I think finishing mangos would be best.

That's something I do in work-time, which atm is most of my day already. :P

Right, garden it is. And no it won't grow mangos.

Basically the idea is a stream/fountain system with ponds and wotnot, dividing the microgarden into areas. The fire feature will sit in a pond opposite the water fountain, allowing for reflections... will look something like 4/5 candle flames on a rock pile. One part will be mostly mosses, another a tiny sand garden, another will probably centre around a small fern, etc.

Interestingly this kind of thing isn't uncommon in Japan, a lot of the plants I'm looking at (including the brilliantly named Yuri Hime) are Japanese. I'm not really a fan of bonsai, although I realise it's pretty much perfect for what I'd need. I may re-evaluate the idea as time goes on.

Anyway, ideas for features/plants etc now being taken. I've not yet found a suitable small climber, I'd be especially interested in ideas for such. I've already found micro lily pads, mosses are an excellent substitute for a large range of plants, and a large list of candidates for larger options.

Pic semi related, it's a Japanese Zen moss garden.

Download the first draft here:

If you like it, tell me what you liked! If you didn't like it, tell me what I could've done better! Hell, tell me both, it's the only way I'll learn!

It's Creative Commons'd (Attribution, Non-Commercial, Shre Alike), too. When I prep the first draft for a CreateSpace copy, I'll post a proper .pdf version for your reading pleasure. Then after I get feedback, it's revision time and publisher-huntin' time!

Thanks in advance for anyone both curious and wiling to help a novice writer get his story done right!

>> No.908   [Delete]   [Edit]

Well i'm on page 5 and so far its pretty good. I can picture most characters and places in my head. at first i had to mentally adjust myself so i can actually figure out what was going on. But now i can follow the story which has a sort of flow to it. The thing that interrupts that flow would be when the story shifts to another character but all i have to do is just re-read the opening of the character again and re-adjust to another point of view. I'll leave more input as i read more but so far its a good read :)

>> No.948   [Delete]   [Edit]

hello there kriegsy, I've only read the first bit of your story so far, but from what I've read the world has caught my interest. I'll most likely be finished reading it by tomorrow at some point.
I intend to go through it and give my oppinion on anything that catches my attention.
I'm no proffesional writer, and don't claim to be an expert on the subject. but I do have allot of experience reading others work, and some small experience writing myself, I'll try my best to give you what advice I can from the readers point of view. however everything I say is simply my own humble oppinion, so feel free to listen to what you find logical and disregard the rest.

the first thing thing that confused me slightly as a reader was this.

"It was an inevitability. And so it was. A pity that it was premeditated; the moons had their blood, but not the satisfaction of knowing the summer brought it about.
It was merely a police action."`

allthough it does its job in setting the mood to "mysterious, violent, melancholy" some of it doesn't make allot of sense to me. for example.

Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.

Thanks. I'll be sure to remember. The main thing though, is that all of the manuals and tutorials that I'm finding don't say anything about using a thump-keg. How am I supposed to go about using it?

Its the middle container in this image. its just a sealed container with a tube the steam enters and one it exits before it go into the condenser. it usually has bad alcohol or water in the bottom

>> No.909   [Delete]   [Edit]

Just a small update I recently learned. I made an error about the picture in my previous post.
a doubler/thump-keg would involve the pipe leading into it to go completely beneath the surface of the alcohol inside while the exiting tube should remain above the surface.
without it being set up this way it will not ketch the impurities but only serve as a place the ketch the foam from a boil-over, or what moonshiners would refer to as "puking"

>> No.968   [Delete]   [Edit]

thats a nigger setup if ive ever seen one

>> No.1037   [Delete]   [Edit]

I plan on making a thumper out of a popcorn tin. Can I use silicone to seal the lid? Or does the steam get too hot in the thumper?

Mysticode told me to post pics. I only have my shitty phone to take pics with, so bear with me.

Here's more or less an overview, the cardboard frame the mobo's lying on is just so that I won't accidentally fry it with shit i may have lying on my desk. :|

My harddrives are also in their original slots, so that they can be cooled with the fan that's placed behind it. I just flipped them in the slots so that they wouldn't be upside down.

Here's an attempted closeup at the aftermarket GPU cooler I got for a HD6870 that I bought off a friend for real cheap (the stock cooler was pretty much broken). It's the only reason why I have my mobo lying on a ghetto pizza box contraption, because the cooler extends the length of the card by about 7-8cm, and thus won't fit in my case. I really don't want to use my HD4870 when I have a card like this fully functional and ready to go.
