You should read the original manga desu, it's very different from the anime. It has a worse ending than the anime but it's worth reading (speaking as someone who went from the anime to the manga). Zero is mostly detached from it so you could read that to. You must read them all desu.

She does jack as main character though, both she and Kiku really. The actual stars of the show are pretty much every character BUT them.

You need to read and finish the sequel manga. The ending isn't as bad as people make it out to be. They at least got more than one chapter to wrap things up before the axe hit, so all things considered it could've been much, much worse than the original manga's ending.

It's a prequel so the authors expect you to be familiar with the characters which means there isn't much room for them to change or grow, so imo making the humans do a lot of the heavy lifting is a good writing decision. Also it's got less shonen fighting which was the weakest part of the old manga, so again the focus on the humans as the substance is good. Suiseiseki is still in it a lot and gets a lot of nice screen time but they can't exactly have her grow or change a lot or it would be strange as a prequel (okay, you could argue Suiseiseki having a history of a close and happy relationship with humans in the prequel makes her later distrust based on Souseiseki's bad master in the original silly, but the flow of time in the N field might be convoluted and maybe she forgot...)
